Hanoi, reaching for the dreamAdd to Lightbox Download
Vietnam, Hanoi. A visitor at the Hoa Lo Prison. Known as the 'Hanoi Hilton', was a prison used by the French for political prisoners and later by North Vietnam for prisoners during the Vietnam War. Today is a museum. Hanoi, a 1,000-year-old city, capital of Vietnam, is one of the most densely populated urban habitats on the planet. Urbanization is occurring in unprecedented rates, the migration flow to the city center from other provinces is steadily increasing. Hanoi is chaotic, scooter-infested, crowded, lacking privacy (anything you can imagine happens on the sidewalk) and rapidly changing. The new generation sip cappuccinos and chat on cell phones and has no memory of the war and of chronic poverty. But Hanoi is also a destination for migrants from the countryside and Phuc Tan, one of the poorest areas is usually the first stop and thus the home of the 'Vietnamese Dream'.
