1937 Haunted Beijing: what remainsAdd to Lightbox Download
China, Beijing. Today Chuanban Hutong is a normal looking hutong: bars and brothels are gone, replaced by small budget hotels and cheap restaurants.
The Badlands: the most scandalous neighborhood in old Beijing and also one of the central points in the investigation into Pamela's e murder. The no-man's land known in the 1930s as the Peking 'Badlands', provided a buffer zone between Chinese and foreign Peking until the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911. Since the end of the First World War the area became increasingly developed, and places like Chuanpan and Huoguo Hutong were built. Chuanpan Hutong, now Chuanban Hutong, was 'the baddest and most depraved street in old Peking'. This is where much of the action of Midnight in Peking takes place, where many of the suspects and witnesses to the murder of Pamela Werner lived, worked and spent their lives.
